My Costumes

Fortune Teller

Carnival Of Curiosities

This Costume was created for a second year project: Designing and creating a costume for an abstract character to suit a Circus scenario.

After coming back from a family trip to a small and still traditional, greek island I was inspired by the traditional dresses from both past and present that I saw in a local museum. I wanted to create a character from Naxos who workedin a  circus as a fortune teller. My character brought some details from her traditional dress into her costume but also mixed in new materials and shapes to make it more modern.  I also incorporated some recycled materials including leather from an old piece of furniture.

What the costume consists of:

  • A handmade suede waistcoat

  • Fitted flared sleeve bodice

  • Fitted flared trousers

  • Adapted shawl

  • Velvet Headwrap

Kendall Jenner's 2019 Met Gala

Interpretation

For my Final Year Project I chose to interpret a Met Gala costume worn by Kendall Jenner.

The two main reasons this garment was chosen were:

  1. To link one of my costumes to my dissertation entitled: In the Eye of the Beholder is the Division Between Costume and Fashions Becoming Less Distinct as Society Evolves? The costume emphasis how the division between Costume hand Fashion has become blurred and Met Gala costumes are often created by Couture Fashion Designers but seen as costumes

  2. Interpreting a high fashion garment without the need to use 100% raw/new materials. This costume was based on 75% recycled material including old prom dresses and scrap fabrics with handmade feathers replacing the natural cock feathers yet still creating an impact..

What this costume consists of:

  • This garment used the mesh layers of prom dresses and stripped back boning to create the feathers

  • The main dress sections are made from the base layer bodice of a prom dress  covered in some scrap net and hand gemmed to create the embellished effect

  • The mesh sleeve is made from scrap netting recycled from an earlier project

  • The skirt is made of recycled cotton for a strong, supportive base which was hand-dyed to match the dress

  • Second-hand jewellery was used to finalise the effect for the shoot

The Devil Costume

Rockeman

Interpretation

For my second final year project I chose to interpret the Devil costume from Rocketman.

I chose this garment because I wanted to develop skills I already have and explore some new techniques.  I was keen to do some millinery work with the hat in particular.  The gems, feathers and colour brought a similarity to my previous Met Gala dress but the actual costume itself was totally different.  I think together these two costumes showcase the wide range of skills that I have now learned.

This costume symbolises the alter-ego of Elton John represented as the Devil and through the film at AA meetings he strips away this part of his character and removes elements of the costume one item at a time.

What this costume consists of:

  • Pattern drafting, adapting and cutting for a stretch fitted garment

  • Creating a pattern that fits the models measurements perfectly

  • Millinery

  • Welding and metal work

  • Working with and manipulating feathers

  • Colour matching

  • Gemming garments with a mix of hot fix and gem tack

  • Makeup and styling

  • Sourcing parts of the costume. e.g the shoes and glasses
